We are pleased to offer this impressive 6 gallon Stoneware Jar made by Wilkinson & Fleming of Shinnston, West Virginia, circa 1875. Its large size, strong cobalt decoration, and clearly identified West Virginia origin make it an especially appealing example for collectors of Shinnston and West Virginia stoneware.

The jar has a semi ovoid body with a tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and a semi rounded rim. The front is boldly decorated with a large stenciled cobalt rose, surrounded by the maker's inscription “Wilkinson & Fleming / Shinnston W Va.” Above the rose is a prominent stenciled “6”, flanked by graduated vertical dashes. A freehand cobalt stripe encircles the jar below the rim, with additional cobalt highlights decorating the handle terminals.

The condition is excellent overall with some exfoliation to the Albany slip interior. There's also a 1" shallow flake along the bottom edge believed to have occurred during firing. Otherwise, the jar remains essentially as made with height at 16 7/8".

The combination of the large floral stencil, maker's identification, and Shinnston, West Virginia designation gives this jar a strong regional identity. It's a standout piece that would be the highlight of any West Virginia collection.
