Presenting a wonderful large antique oyster carrier retaining its original mustard yellow painted finish, wooden construction, iron lined interior walls and original hardware. The front has an original iron closure, with 14115 carved into the upper wooden band. The reverse bears the original metal plate impressed “SEALSHIPT PATENTS” with multiple patent numbers, along with the original hinge hardware.

The carrier is constructed of wooden staves with iron lining along the interior walls and a wooden bottom with a drain opening. The lid is also wooden and retains its original heavy iron rim, hinge and closure hardware. Original galvanized iron side chains and handles remain in place.

The body retains its exceptional mustard yellow paint with expected wear. Old writing, numbers and other working marks remain visible around the body, reflecting its years of commercial use.

Sealshipt was a patented oyster shipping system developed for the transportation and repeated return of oysters. This is an unusually large and substantial example, measuring approximately 17" high x 18" across from hinge to latch.

Condition is very good for its age and intended working use, with expected paint loss, surface wear, minor age splits and wear to the wood, as well as, other signs of use. The original hardware, painted surface, markings and iron lining remain. No attempt has been made to clean or restore the surface.

This is a rare and highly unusual piece of early oyster history with exceptional original surface, construction and hardware.
