We are pleased to offer a fine 4 gallon Baltimore Stoneware Cake Crock with distinctive cobalt floral decoration, dating from 1850 through 1875.
The substantial cylindrical crock has a warm salt glazed surface with two applied handles and a broad rolled rim. The exterior is beautifully decorated with hand brushed cobalt flowers, leaves, and flowing stems arranged around the body with cobalt highlights to the handles. The bold yet simple decoration is characteristic of Baltimore stoneware of the period.
The underside bears an impressed upside down “4” gallonage mark. The piece also retains the natural variations and minor surface irregularities associated with the manufacturing process.
There are minor flakes to the interior and outer rim edge. There is a 1 1/2" flake to the bottom that is slightly visible along the base edge. Otherwise, the crock presents well with no hairlines or restorations noted.
The dimensions are 14" in diameter and 9" in height.
This impressive Baltimore Cake Crock, distinguished by its unusually large four gallon capacity and expressive cobalt floral decoration, would be a great addition to any collection.
