Offered for sale is a fine 19th century Stoneware Canning Jar, with a distinctive cobalt stenciled shield decoration. The shield is made of cobalt dashes and contains added floral and geometric motifs. The stencil appears to read “S. Hamilton & Co. and “Greensboro, PA.”, consistent with the documented J. & S. Hamilton & Co. stoneware tradition of Greensboro.
 
The jar is 1 gallon in size and measures 8 1/2" high, with a  5 3/8" bottom diameter. There are a couple of tiny flakes along the interior lip. There's also an area of extra clay along the base, adding to its original character.
