Offering a striking 2 gallon salt glazed stoneware jar made by Jas. Hamilton & Co., Greensboro, Pennsylvania. This circa 1875 jar features an unusual and particularly large cobalt stenciled shield decoration, with the Hamilton maker's mark incorporated into the design. The shield occupies much of the front of the jar and is flanked by additional cobalt decoration, giving the piece a bold appearance.
 
There is a brushed cobalt stripe around the shoulder and a wavy cobalt line, with a stenciled 2 and cobalt flourishes near the base. The jar has a rounded form, tooled shoulder, and substantial rounded rim. This Western Pennsylvania jar has a gray salt glazed surface showing natural glaze variations. It measures 7" diameter x 12" high.
 
Condition is excellent with only a 1/8" nibble and a 3/4" flake to the interior edge of the rim. Some typical minor surface and firing imperfections are also found, with no other chips, cracks, or restorations noted.
 
This is a particularly appealing example of Hamilton's stoneware, with the large shield decoration being an unusual and distinctive feature.
