Large antique bottom stacking firkin in what appears to be its original oxblood red paint, with a wonderfully aged and worn surface. The substantial 15 1/2" diameter gives this piece an impressive presence.
 
The body is made of narrow wooden staves with broad wooden bands and distinctive finger lapped construction along both the top and bottom. The arched wooden handle is attached directly to the body. The original lid also has a finger lap with both nails and a staple.
 
There is some age related damage and loss to the bottom finger laps, along with expected surface wear and minor separations from use. Height is 13 1/2" and 20" high with handle, diameter is 15 1/2".
 
A wonderful primitive piece with excellent scale, original surface, and plenty of character.
