Offered for your consideration is a fine Pittsburgh Stoneware Advertising Jug bearing the cobalt inscription “Ommert & Hoffield, Choice Family Groceries, No. 17 Diamond, Pitts., Pa.” The jug features an applied handle, freehand cobalt wavy line on front shoulder, cobalt line at the base, and bold stenciled cobalt lettering.
 
Ommert & Hoffield examples are documented in the stoneware market as Pittsburgh advertising stoneware of Western Pennsylvania origin, with examples dating to the mid 1870's.
 
We believe the jug to be a 2 Gallon with measurements of 12" high and a 6 1/4" base diameter. There is a small flake on the base, with no other chips, cracks, or restorations. There's also a factory indentation beneath the handle and expected surface crazing found in early salt-glazed stoneware.
