Presenting a striking 2 Gallon salt glazed Stoneware Jar made by Richey & Hamilton of Palatine, West Virginia, circa 1875.

The jar has a tapered form with a pronounced shoulder, tooled neck, and broad rounded rim. Three cobalt stripes are found beneath the rim, on the shoulder, and along the base. Additional cobalt decoration includes the maker’s name with floral and foliate motifs, along with a cobalt “2” on the front. There is another cobalt “2” stenciled on the reverse, adding wonderful visual interest to the piece.

Richey & Hamilton operated a pottery in Palatine during the late nineteenth century, producing the distinctive cobalt-decorated salt-glazed stoneware associated with the area. Palatine was located along the Monongahela River and was incorporated into Fairmont in 1899.

The jar is in excellent antique condition, with a minor firing irregularity and one small flake along the base edge. The rim is slightly slanted, consistent with its handmade production. Dimensions are 11 7/8" high x 7 1/2" diameter.

The two cobalt “2” markings make this an especially interesting addition to any collection of West Virginia stoneware.
