2 Gallon Stoneware CAKE CROCK attributed to the Seymour Brothers, Hartford, CT, circa 1870's. Rarely seen Cobalt slip decoration of a six pionted Star with bold and vibrant color. Wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with tooled rounded rim and applied lug handles. Impressed below the rim the number 2, showing gallon capacity and below the 2 is an incised line. The interior is albany slip with a flake on the top lip. A 6" hairline is found on the base that extends up the sidewall about two inches. The line is tight and only a portion goes through the base, but not the sidewall. There are firing and glaze imperfections that are in the making. This exceptional Cake Crock with a rare design would be the perfect addition to any stoneware collection.
