Offered for sale is a fine 3 gallon cobalt decorated Stoneware Merchant Jug for Schaefer & Driehorst, Wines & Liquors, 1428 Main St., Wheeling, W. Va. The jug dates to the 1880 to 1890 period and was likely made in Palatine, West Virginia.
 
The large semi ovoid jug has a warm brown salt glazed surface with a short neck and applied spout. A boldly brushed cobalt “3” dominates the shoulder, surrounded by vertical cobalt strokes. The lower body is stenciled with the firm's advertising, including “SCHAEFER & DRIEHORST,” “WINES & LIQUORS,” “1428 MAIN ST.” and “WHEELING, W. VA.”
 
The jug retains the character of its original manufacture, with natural variations in the salt glaze, minor kiln related surface irregularities, and factory stacking marks. The advertising remains boldly legible, with minor expected wear.
 
The dimensions are 16 1/4" in height and 7" in base diameter.
 
This is a particularly appealing example of late 19th century advertising stoneware, distinguished by its large three gallon capacity, bold cobalt decoration, warm salt glazed surface, and well preserved Wheeling advertising.
