A wonderful late 19th century advertising stoneware Jug made by the N. A. White & Son pottery of Utica, New York, dating from 1882 to 1890. The shoulder is impressed N. A. WHITE & SON / UTICA N.Y., while the body carries bold cobalt blue stencil advertising for WINCHELL & DAVIS / WHOLESALE / WINES & LIQUORS / ALBANY N.Y.

Winchell & Davis was an Albany wine and liquor firm established in the early 1880s. Their advertising jugs are appealing examples showing how local merchants used stoneware to promote their businesses.

The jug has a lovely rounded form with an applied handle and warm, lightly speckled surface with factory glaze irregularities. The cobalt stencil remains strong and remarkably legible. Excellent overall condition with only a 1/4" flake to the spout. There is also a small glazed over firing imperfection at the base. The jug measures 11" high x 7.25" diameter.

A great example of early Albany advertising, with strong cobalt lettering and plenty of honest factory character.
